ebb face.jpg My practice focuses on understanding the educational strengths and weaknesses of school-aged children, adolescents, and young adults. This requires an assessment of a person's cognitive abilities and academic achievement in the context of his or her overall personality and family.

Parents usually are referred by someone from their children's school or a pediatrician. They often are concerned that something is getting in the way of their children doing as well as they should in school.

A typical evaluation begins with a parent interview plus a review of the child's school records, any prior test results, and input from current teachers. Standardized testing usually takes from three to four hours. Students come to my office, located in a quiet residential area of Chapel Hill, where we work together at their pace.

Test scoring, interpretation, and a written report usually require another three to four hours of my time; I then discuss the results with the parents and, as appropriate, with the student. I am happy to meet with teachers and other professionals when families ask me to do so.

A thorough evaluation requires six to twelve hours of my time. The process is expensive and usually is not covered by health insurance. Nonetheless, many families appreciate that I am able to commit a substantial amount of time to one student at a time. As a result I ordinarily can complete an evaluation within two weeks. Another advantage is that my services are completely confidential; parents decide how my reports are used.

Over the past twenty years I've done hundreds of evaluations for the Veteran's Administration, the Center for Development and Learning (CDL) at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County schools, and various charter and private schools in the Triangle. I now restrict my professional work to my private practice.
